Butterfly Messages edition by Jamie Elizabeth Tingen Romance eBooks Reviews
Here is a sweet love story that is only 187 pages long, so everything happens in this story at a good pace. This sweet love story is about two long lost lovers that were separated as teenagers, who truly loved each other, but the boy's parents wanted their son to marry better because the father's political aspirations, he made his son marry another girl from a better family right before he was to marry Mag who came from a troubled family. Now 40 years later they get together, but the one caveat, Ashton is now dying of cancer. Both have secrets they are keeping from each other from the past, will Ash tell Mag his secret before it is too late? Will they be able to make up for 40 years they have lost together as they fall in love all over again in the short time Ash has to live? Ash teaches Mag how to live each day in the moment as he is dying, but how will Mag be able to go on after finding her true love again only to lose him again? This book has a surprise ending which is why the author wrote another book called Betrayed by a Butterfly, I strongly suggest you read to find out what happens to all the character from the first book.
The story packs a prevalent theme of living in the moment. The past is revealed in the telling. Mag is trying to come to terms with things in her life. She’s led a hard life, alcoholic parents, abuse, teen pregnancy, a broken engagement, and the death of a baby. It seems like things may finally be looking up for her. She travels home for a reunion and must come to terms with the past.
An old love comes into her life and she must decide if she is willing to let him back in. The mystery surrounding why he left and broke their engagement is revealed, but with so much going on can they even think to try and trust their feelings?
There are several things happen that make you wonder...like the circumstances of her baby’s death. How and why she took the explanation at face value without having more proof. Then there is the cancer. Does Ash have cancer? With Mag trying to make a go of things from long distance, she isn’t able to get the answers like she needs. Frustrated and sad what choices will she make?
If you like a little mystery in your romance, then you will enjoy this book. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book has a great premise. I enjoyed the author's present-day beginning with much of the book peaking as look into the past, and then circling back to end in the present time with a giant twist (there is another book that picks up where this one leaves us). Ms. Tingen had some pretty decent spins on very cliche plotlines lost love of the past reaches out after many years because a fatal illness is forcing their hand into a live-for-the-moment mindset. Regrets of the past are haunting the protagonist, Mag, and she demonstrates this heartache via conversations with her endearing aunt, her lifelong friend, and, oddly, her imaginary friend from her childhood. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly why the book fell flat for me. I don't know if there wasn't enough content between transitions, making the reading feel disjointed and hustled, or if lacked anything in the way of major appeal of character or setting. Nothing in the book was horrible, but nothing really made me intrigued enough to hook me, either. I did get the sequel to this short novel, so I'm hopeful that it gains a more powerful momentum and offers more girth to the story. It's a good enough short book if you're in the mood for the plot.
"Life is uncertain, so, like a butterfly, savor the sweet nectar of the moment." - Butterfly Messages
Magnolia Gardner has lead a rough life. From growing up in an abusive home to losing the love of her life, she has experienced more heartache than many of us ever will. But when her high sweetheart appears after 40 years, Mag wonders if maybe her future is finally going to be brighter.
Mag left the small town of Parkersville years ago, only to visit every now and again to see her aunt Belle. Mag's home life was a nightmare with an abusive father and drunk mother. She survived her childhood, being bounced around from home to home, with the help of her best friend Lily and her imaginary friend Kizzy. But her family wasn't the reason for leaving Parkersville, it was the loss of her love, Ash. Ash and Mag were engaged to be married. They were deeply in love and everyone knew it. Then one day, while on a picnic to Sugar Mountain, Ash did the unimaginable, he left. Without so much of an explanation, Ashton Johnson said he couldn't marry Mag and left her alone on the mountain. Completely heartbroken, and newly pregnant with Ash's child, Mag knew she needed to leave Parkersville and leave the past behind.
40 years later when Mag decides to return to Parkersville attend her high school reunion, she is caught off guard when she receives a call from non other than her lost love. Needing answers as to why he left, she decides to meet Ash under the disguise of needing his advice about what to do with her childhood home. Thus begins a new life for Mag, finding lost love, starting fresh, and helping children in need. Along for the ride is Scratch, who becomes her right hand man. A true southerner, quite rough around the edges, Scratch imparts many wise "papa-isms" that change Mag's way of thinking and help her finally deal with some of the toughest parts of her life. Together, they all work to take what was a horrible past and turn it into a beautiful and bright future full of butterfly messages.
Butterfly Messages is a wonderful read. I highly recommend this novel for anyone who loves a good romance. It isn't only romance though, with a strong female lead, it is a great example of overcoming adversity and pushing through the tough times to create your own future. Butterfly Messages imparts lots of wisdom for the younger generation, as well as older folks. I believe anyone ranging from a teen to a mature adult would enjoy this book, and with little to no offensive language, it is suitable for the younger audience. There are some more adult situations, such as the (physically) abusive father and unwed pregnancy, but little time is spent on those parts. There is a lot that each of us can take away from Butterfly Messages that may just help improve our own lives. Happy Reading!
Reading Butterfly Messages reinforced why it is so important to really appreciate every day and live in the moment. It teaches us to cherish memories but to not dwell in the past. Loved it!
